Student Degrees

Licentiate

  • A Licentiate of the RUM has completed 15 credit-hours of classes spread among any of the Colleges.
  • An individual class may only count towards the degree once.
  • Recipients of the Licentiate degree may call themselves “[name], Licentiate of the Royal University of the MidRealm.”
  • If 7 hours are taken in a particular college, the Licentiate may include an emphasis in that discipline, IE: “[name], Licentiate of the Royal University of the MidRealm with an Emphasis in [College name]”.

Graduate

  • A Graduate of the RUM has completed 30 credit-hours of classes spread among any of the colleges.
  • An individual class may only count towards the degree once.
  • Hours earned for a Licentiate degree may be used towards the Graduate degree.
  • 15 credit-hours of the required 30 must be taken within a single College of Emphasis.
  • Recipients of the Graduate degree may call themselves “[name], Graduate of the Royal University of the MidRealm with an emphasis in [College name].”

Adept

  • An Adept of the RUM has completed 55 credit-hours of classes spread among any of the colleges.
  • An individual class may only count towards the degree once.
  • Hours earned for all previous degrees may be used towards the Adept degree.
  • 30 credit-hours must be taken within a single College of Emphasis.
  • Recipients of the Adept degree may call themselves “[name], Adept of the [College name], Graduate of the Royal University of the MidRealm.”

Here’s how it works:

Lady Guinevere is new to the RUM system. She goes to the RUM event and takes four classes:

  1. Heralding 101 (1 hour, College of SCA Administration & History)
  2. How to Run a List Table (2 hours, College of Martial Arts)
  3. Combat Archery 101 (1 hour, College of Martial Arts)
  4. Elizabethan Hats (1 hour, College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences)

This gives her five credit hours on her transcript. Later that year, she goes to Pots and Pens, and takes three classes:

  1. Calligraphy 101 (1 hour, College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences)
  2. Applying Gold Leaf (1 hour, College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences)
  3. Bar and Ivy in Italian Illuminated Manuscripts (1 hour, College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences)

This gives her three more credit hours, or eight total credit hours. Then, she goes to Pennsic and takes five classes over four days:

  1. Advanced List Table Management (2 hours, College of Martial Arts)
  2. Combat Archery 201 (2 hours, College of Martial Arts)
  3. How to Crew a Siege Weapon (1 hour, College of Martial Arts)
  4. How to Make a Calligraphy Quill (1 hour, College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences)
  5. Identifying Blazons in Heraldry (1 hour, College of SCA Administration & History)

This gives her an additional seven credit hours, which gives her fifteen credit hours total.

Her transcript breaks down like this:

College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences (5 hours)
College of Martial Arts (8 hours)
College of SCA Administration & History (2 hours)

Because Lady Guinevere has over seven hours in the College of Martial Arts, she is allowed to declare herself a Licentiate of the RUM, with an emphasis in the College of Martial Arts.

When Lady Guinevere decides to proceed to a Graduate degree, she may use all of these hours towards it. She has a total of 15 hours, with a lot of hours in Martial Arts, and several hours in Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences. Guinevere can take any classes she wants, so long as she ends up with 30 hours total, with 15 of those hours from a specific College. The same thing applies for an Adept degree — all hours earned towards the Licentiate and Graduate degrees count towards achieving the Adept degree.
