Time: 4:00 PM, Duration: 1 hour, Location: Room 01
Taught by: Brusten de Bearsul
The Alquerque family of games are strategic board games played with boards made of a series of intersecting lines, most often square, with two sets of markers. While the game can be played by children, it was most commonly an adult pastime. The game begins with the board nearly covered in markers, often coins, that are captured and removed in the course of play. When played as a gambling game, actual coins could be used as the stakes in the game, or various items could be used as markers. Markers that can be documented in period range from worthless stone chips to elaborate precious metal and gemstone pieces.
Class will start with a lecture on the history and variations of the games followed by play of the most common variant, the 25-spot board. Copies of the board game will be available free up to the stated class limit. Additional students are welcome to sit in but may not get a chance to play.
