Korean Garb from Three Kingdoms to Joseon

A full overview focusing on tracking the evolution of clothing worn by Koreans from the (Korean) Three Kingdoms period (18 BC – 660 AD) to Joseon dynasty (Using the Imjin War/Japanese Invasions as a cutoff), and a smidge further, to show how these garments came to be the ones we know and love in Sageuks (Korean Period Dramas) today, and some pitfalls to avoid if you’re thinking of making some hanbok for garb!

Ooh Shiny: Painting with Metallics on Black
Taught by: Matildis la Libraire, OL
Black Hours manuscripts are known for their striking use of gold and silver on black backgrounds, sometimes with additional color and sometimes not. In this class, Matildis will explain the technique of painting with gold or silver, and how it differs from painting with opaque colors. Students will make and take an artist trading card with a design of their choice in gold, silver, or both.

Ridiculously Easy Flowers for Border Illustrations
Taught by: Matildis la Libraire, OL
The border style of the mid to late 1400s emphasized speed and simplicity of its elements, which were then layered to produce the illusion of complexity. Many of the flowers are barely a step above doodling. Matildis will teach the techniques for several types of flowers, then students will paint an artist trading card using these techniques.

Fabric Stencilling vs. Block Printing
Taught by: Master Conal O’hAirt and Laureate Aveline de Ceresbroch
A two-hour class showing various techniques for embellishing fabrics with paints. Master Conal o’hAirt will teach how to use stencils and Laureate Aveline de Ceresbroch will teach how to block print. Bring up to two yards of fabric or utilize one of our canvas bags to learn two different period techniques for decorating garments and furnishings. Also, bring (simple) art and you may be able to make a stencil from it, too! (Sorry, carving blocks takes a lot more time!)
