- An individual class will be counted towards the degree up to than 4 times within a 1 year period.
- Recipients of the Academician degree may call themselves “[name], Academician of the [College of Emphasis] of the Royal University of the MidRealm.”
Here’s how it works:
Baron Galahad decides to pursue a Lector degree, so he starts off by teaching two classes at the regular RUM starting in November:
- Heralding 101 (1 hour, College of SCA Administration & History)
- How to Run a Tournament (1 hour, College of Martial Arts)
That gives him two hours of teaching. He then teaches three classes at the Martial RUM in May:
- Combat Archery 101 (1 hour, College of Martial Arts)
- How to Run a Tournament (1 hour, College of Martial Arts)
- Advanced Calligraphy (2 hours, College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences)
This gives him six teaching hours.
Now he goes to Pots and Pens and teaches three classes in June:
- Advanced Calligraphy (2 hours, College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences)
- Applying Gold Leaf (1 hour, College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences)
- How to Run a Tournament (1 hour, College of Martial Arts)
Now he has ten teaching hours.
Now Galahad goes to Pennsic and teaches three classes over four days in August:
- Bar and Ivy in Italian Illuminated Manuscripts (1 hour, College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences)
- How to Run a Tournament (1 hour, College of Martial Arts)
- How to Make a Calligraphy Quill (1 hour, College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences)
He now has 13 teaching hours. However, he has taught How to Run a Tournament four times, which means it can no longer be counted towards the Lector degree within the 12 month period.
Baron Galahad goes to Coronation and teaches three classes:
- Bar and Ivy in Italian Illuminated Manuscripts (1 hour, College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences)
- How to Run a Tournament (1 hour, College of Martial Arts)
- How to Make a Calligraphy Quill (1 hour, College of Technological and Studio Arts & Sciences)
Only the Bar and Ivy class and the How to make a Calligraphy Quill class count, but now he has 15 teaching hours, and qualifies for a Lector degree.
In order to get an Academician Degree, he will need to teach at least 40 hours total (including the hours he already gathered getting his Lector degree), making sure that 20 of those hours are in a single college of emphasis. The class list above has 6 hours in the College of Martial Arts, and 8 hours in the College of Technological and Studio Arts, so Baron Galahad has the opportunity to choose to focus on either of those colleges. Once 12 months has passed from teaching a class for the first time, Baron Galahad can get credit for repeat teaching his classes another four times. Once Baron Galahad has taught 20 hours in his College of Emphasis and another 20 hours of any other classes, he will be eligible for the Academician degree.
